How Are NRI Seats Allotted in Punjab? Understanding BFUHS Priorities

If you are aiming to secure an NRI quota MBBS seat in Punjab through the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) counselling, simply clearing the NEET-UG exam is not enough. Admissions are absolutely merit-based, but preference is strictly given in a cascading order based on your NRI origin and domicile.

If you are drafting your application strategy, you must understand exactly where you fall within these four categories:

• Priority I: This top-tier preference is strictly reserved for actual NRIs or Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) who originally belong to the State of Punjab.

• Priority II: This secondary preference is granted to the children of NRIs or OCIs who originally belong to the State of Punjab.

• Priority III: If seats remain vacant after the first two rounds, preference shifts to actual NRIs or OCIs who originally belong to an Indian State other than Punjab.

• Priority IV: The final preference category includes the children of NRIs or OCIs who originally belong to an Indian State other than Punjab.

During the seat allotment process, all Priority I candidates will be evaluated and placed first based on their NEET 2026 merit. Only after the Priority I list is exhausted will the counselling authority move on to allot seats to Priority II candidates, and so forth down the line.

Unlike several other Indian states that permit extended first-degree relatives (such as uncles, aunts, or grandparents) to act as financial sponsors, BFUHS has implemented a rigid restriction. There is absolutely NO sponsored quota allowed in Punjab.

To be eligible for the NRI quota in this state, either you must be an actual NRI/OCI, or your parents must be the NRIs/OCIs. If you were planning to rely on an uncle, an extended family member, or a distant relative for sponsorship, your application will face immediate disqualification during document verification. Your documentation must directly and indisputably prove that you or your parents hold the necessary NRI/OCI status.

Do not wait for the general All India Quota (AIQ) counselling to conclude before focusing on your NRI documentation. Generating specific residency proofs, embassy certificates, and proving your exact priority category takes substantial time, especially when coordinating across different international time zones. Ensure your exact Priority category is clearly established with flawless documentation well before the BFUHS registration window closes.
