How Are NRI Seats Allotted in Gujarat? Understanding ACPUGMEC Priorities

If you are aiming to secure an NRI quota MBBS seat in Gujarat through the Admission Committee for Professional Undergraduate Medical Educational Courses (ACPUGMEC) counselling, understanding the seat allocation algorithm is crucial. During Gujarat State Counselling, seats are allotted based on NEET 2026 merit, but preference is strictly given in a cascading order.

If you are structuring your NRI application, you must determine your exact position within these priority levels:

  • Priority I (Gujarat Origin): This top-tier preference is granted to actual NRIs / OCIs or Children of NRIs who originally have their domicile or ancestral roots in the State of Gujarat.

  • Priority II (Other Indian Origin): This secondary preference is granted to actual NRIs / OCIs or Children of NRIs who originally belong to an Indian State other than Gujarat.

During the seat allotment process, all Priority I candidates will be evaluated and placed first based on their NEET 2026 merit score. Only after the Priority I list is completely exhausted will the counselling authority move on to allot seats to Priority II candidates.

The Strict Sponsorship Rule: Sponsored Wards Are Banned

One of the most critical elements that NRI aspirants misunderstand about the Gujarat counselling process is the rule on sponsorship.

Unlike states that permit extended family members (such as uncles, aunts, or grandparents) to act as financial sponsors, ACPUGMEC has implemented a rigid restriction. For Priority III (Sponsored Wards), they are strictly NOT allowed.

To be eligible for the NRI quota in this state, either you must be an actual NRI/OCI, or your parents must be the NRIs/OCIs. If you submit an application relying on an extended family member for sponsorship, your application will face immediate rejection during the physical document verification process. Your documentation must directly and indisputably prove that you or your parents hold the necessary NRI/OCI status.

Strategic Advice for 2026 Aspirants

Do not wait for the general counselling rounds to begin before focusing on your NRI documentation. Generating specific residency proofs, embassy certificates, and proving your exact priority category takes substantial time. Ensure your exact Priority category is clearly established with flawless documentation well before the ACPUGMEC online registration and PIN purchase window closes.
